Plan a Canadian road trip
Tell us where you are driving from and to, and how long you have. We will work out the route, split it into days, and pick the places worth stopping for on the way.
How it works
We take the driving route between the two places, split it into daily legs of no more than six hours, and look for places worth seeing within about thirty kilometres of the road — roughly twenty minutes off the route each way.
Stops are picked best-known first, but never more than two from one town or two of the same kind in a day, so you get a road trip rather than a museum crawl. Each one carries how long a visit usually takes, and the day is budgeted around the driving.
Ask for a return trip and the way home gets the places there was no time for on the way out, rather than the same list twice.
Opening hours are not something we can promise — check the official site before you set off, especially outside the summer.
About the trip planner
How does the road trip planner work?
Give it where you are starting, where you are going and how many days you have. It routes the actual drive along real roads, splits it into days you could reasonably drive, and then looks for places worth stopping for in the corridor either side of the route rather than in a circle around the two ends.
Where do the suggested stops come from?
From the 9,667 places to visit this site holds for Canada - museums, parks, waterfalls, historic sites, galleries, beaches and landmarks - sourced from Wikidata, OpenStreetMap and government open data, plus the events running in the towns along the way while you are there. Nothing is sponsored and nobody pays to appear.
Can I start from a postal code instead of a town?
Yes. Type a Canadian postal code into either box and it will be matched to its forward sortation area from the GeoNames dataset. A code that is not in that dataset is refused rather than guessed at, so you will be told rather than sent somewhere wrong.
Does this book hotels or sell tickets?
No. Nothing here is bookable and nothing is for sale. Where the plan suggests somewhere to stay it is a hotel recorded in OpenStreetMap, listed with its name and where it is and no price, because we hold no prices. Book direct with whoever runs it.
